- Business Retention Incentives
Sparton Electronics, a leading manufacturer of electronic circuit boards used in aerospace, medical, homeland defense and military applications, is considering consolidating production of their facilities in the U.S. and Canada. One option under consideration is consolidating manufacturing from the Jackson, Michigan, and London, Ontario plants to their two manufacturing facilities in Florida (Ridge Manor and De Leon Springs). In an effort to compete with the incentives offered by the State of Michigan and retain the jobs and investment in Hernando County, the Office of Business Development is presenting local business retention incentives to the Board of County Commissioners on April 28, 2009.
The Company currently occupies a 137,000sf building and employs 179 full-time workers. If they choose to remain in Hernando County they plan to expand their facility and add at least 100 additional employees by the end of 2011. Incentives to be provided to the Company, specific to the Ridge Manor facility and subject to Board of County Commission approval, are: Florida Defense and Space Contractor (QDSC) incentive program for the retained and planned new employment, which offers $3,000 per job in tax incentives; local contribution is 20 percent of the total incentive A one-time local $500 per retained job incentive Local impact and building permit fee incentives, should they be needed for the facility improvements, as provided in the Hernando County Incentive Ordinance For the new jobs, a job creation incentive of up to $3,000 per job as provided in the Hernando County Incentive Ordinance All incentives are performance based, requiring a contract with the County that includes annual documentation of job retention and job creation.
